Geology of the Southern Alps (South Island)
6-12 January 2025
This eight-day (7 night) field experience starts in Christchurch and heads west through the southern Alps to explore one of the only places where you can see glaciers in the distance while walking through lush rainforests. The South Island of New Zealand is very tectonically active and we will explore the features associated with active seismicity just as the Kaikoura fault scarp from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2016 and the Southern Alps that formed from the long-term accumulation of deformation along active fault zones. We will also explore the modern glaciers and glacial features formed in response to the rising mountains such as Milford Sound and the Fox Glacier. We will end our trip back in Christchurch where we will learn how the people of the South Island live in the shadows of a seismically active region.
