Our Dynamic Earth : Plate Tectonics and how to introduce it into your classroom - Westbrook, ME. Thursday 6 February 2025. 8.30am-2.30pm.
This one-day session will provide you with the knowledge and confidence to teach about Plate Tectonics. We will go through the theory and use hands-on classroom activities to show you how you can excite your students about the topic.
This session will help you with your approach to teaching not only Plate Tectonics, but also volcanoes and earthquakes.
We will look at reproducible activities and demonstrations and you will receive a package of materials to take right back into your classroom including maps, instructions for demos, and activity sheets.

Birth of the theory (including Continental drift)
Structure of the Earth (and how we found out)
Types of crust (Continental & Oceanic)
Plate Boundaries (Divergent, convergent, transform)
Evidence for Plate Tectonics
– Shape of continents
– Ages or rocks, fossils, mountains
– Earthquake patterns
– Volcano patterns
– Magnetic anomalies and apparent polar wandering
-Hot Spot volcanoes
Course leader
Gary Lewis is a world-renowned award-winning Earth science educator who has published books on teaching Plate Tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, Fossils, climate change and more. Lewis set up the education program at Geoscience Australia, worked with the USGS on This Dynamic Planet project, and leads trips for teachers to Hawaii, Iceland, Italy, UK, Australia and more for in-field learning experiences.
Lewis grew up and went to school in Sydney Australia. He moved to the US in 2004 to become the Senior Director of Education & Outreach for the Geological Society of America. He now lives in Maine with his wife and two teenage boys and runs the GEOetc program.
He will provide a valuable learning experience which you will be easily adapt in your own classroom.
